From the chalet you can walk to the beach at Criel Plage and enjoy the usual beach fun or go shrimping in the rock pools as the tide goes out
The cliffs are the highest chalk cliffs in Europe and you can walk along the top of the cliffs to the next beach, Mesnil le Val or for the more adventurous into Le Treport.
If you don't want to drive into the town of Le Treport, there is a cable car from the top of the cliff to the town - a short drive or cycle from the chalet or a walk for those who prefer to take in the sea air along the cliff tops. The fernicluar runs all day until the early hours of the morning and as of Easter 2007 - it is free of charge to go on!
There is a range of activities on the beach at Criel including a basketball pitch, volley ball pitch, table tennis tables, and, as might be expected in a seaside town in France - a large boules area which is floodlit for the local boules tournament!
There is a also a large enclosed children's play area, suited to a range of ages, which fortunately has seats for the adults and there is a children's paddling pool. Locally you can shrimp on the beach, enjoy sea fishing and also fly fishing nearby. The river L'Yeres finishes in the sea at Criel, upstream you can fish trout, having bought a permit in Criel.
There are 3 local restaurants within walking distance selling simple, value for money French food and one even does a take away pizza service. There is also a local shop which hires bikes and sells beach toys etc. They tend to be open from Easter to the end of October. Out of season, there are plenty of shops in the town centre or in the local towns
Within a short drive there are plenty of beautiful sandy Normandy beaches to explore as well as the wildlife of the Bay de Somme, the seals along the coast and of course explore history following the trail of William the Conqueror or the battlefields to be found around the Somme
The fishing town of Le Treport is 5 minutes away and opposite the beach and harbour there are some fantastic seafood restaurants as well as informal cafes and bars, a fantastic fisherman’s market selling the daily catch and there is also a casino
A short drive away at Dieppe there is the fantastic new Bains de Dieppe..... with pool, spa and thallasotherapy centre, water games, jacuzzi, toboggan and 50m sea water pool, heated to 28°. You can take a look on the website www.lesbainsdieppe.com
Round and about you’ll find plenty of things to do, the Royal town of Eu is minutes away, Rouen is a town not to be missed, Veules les Roses is very charming and the breathtaking beauty of the beaches and wildlife reserves of the Somme are very close by and worth the trip
Although Criel itself is pretty quiet, there are so many good restaurants and brasseries or if you prefer casionos and bars within a short driving distance in the local towns and surrounding area that you would struggle to eat in every good restaurant before you went home!
Situated about an hour and a half from Calais - there are plenty of things to do in Seine Maritime and La Somme and if you want to go further afield, Criel is one of the closest beaches to Paris! However, there is nothing more enjoyable than relaxing and enjoying the good quality sea air and taking it easy for a while!
